How to Maintain Healthy Gums

Nov 22, 2016

Proper oral care includes more than daily brushing. While avoiding cavities and discolored teeth are important, caring for your gums can be just as vital for the health of your mouth. Here are a few ways you can keep your gums healthy and avoid issues that might lead to permanent tooth loss.

Floss Daily

You can avoid gum disease by flossing at least once a day. Flossing cleans between the teeth and removes plaque, which contains harmful bacteria that brushing doesn’t always reach. Ask your dentist to show you the most effective ways to floss.

Avoid Tobacco

Studies performed have shown that smoking is heavily linked to the development of gum disease. It may also cause gingivitis to progress faster and result in a variety of oral problems:
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum tumors
  • Permanent tooth loss
Avoiding smoking and chewing tobacco can vastly improve the health of your gums.

Choose the Right Toothbrush

Not all toothbrushes may be right for your gums. Some might have bristles that are too stiff and could cause bleeding. Consider using an electric toothbrush, which may be more effective in battling the plaque that causes gingivitis.

Taking good care of your gums can lead to a lifetime of good oral health. For more information about how to maintain healthy gums, call P.A. Daniel Jr. DDS at 919-734-4716.
